We were all hoping for our usual cool sunny weather for our spring trial but this year it was not to be! In spite of very cool weather the week before, Sunday dawned uncomfortably hot and muggy and was 90 degrees by the time we got to protection. This was particularly hard on our Canadian competitor Frank McEniry and his dog Zorro who said there was snow on the ground in Quebec when he left to come to our trial. All competitors took the weather in stride and had success. We want to thank our Judge FCI SVF, KZS Bogdan Sergo for putting everyone at ease and for his instructive critiques, and Bill Viebahn for doing excellent helper work for the trial.

On Sunday March 28^th Upper Bucks Schutzhund Club joined with the American Cancer Society and Bark for Life based in Pottstown, Pa to have our First Annual Schutzhund Olympics to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.  We planned it as a fun day based on Schutzhund exercises – but kept the rules easy so everyone could compete no matter what level they were at in training.  Everyone had a great time in spite of the cloudy, chilly weather.

Twenty three dogs and 19 handlers participated – 20 German Shepherds, 2 Malinois, and 1 Doberman.

Four clubs were represented – Hegins Valley, Lehigh Valley, Greater Philadelphia, and Upper Bucks Schutzhund Clubs.

Oldest dog participating was Berta – age 10, mother of 3 other participants (and still very competitive!)

Youngest dog participating was Kraemer – age 8 months! (also a great competitor!)

 

Our judge for the event was Bob Swan – well known in the Schutzhund and police dog training world.

Highest number of retrieves:

This exercise measured the number of retrieves your dog could complete in 3 minutes.

Placements were:

1.      Eian – Susan Sopranzi – 25 retrieves

2.      Fritz – Joe Knapp – 23 retrieves

3.      Tana – Rick Werkheiser – 22 retrieves

4.      Molly – Cheryl Moriarity – 20 retrieves

Probably  the most popular exercise.  We used a stop watch for the top time and a radar gun for the top speed.

3.      Claus – Jane Gable 4.14 seconds

4.      Bullet – Bill Viebahn  4.20 seconds

This was the Grand Finale – the handler must send the dog around blinds 1 to 6. The clock stopped at the dog’s first bark at blind 6.

3. Berta – Daphne Carey – 33.30 seconds (Berta is 10 years old and the mother of Eian, Elka, and Lexi!)

A great time was had by everyone who attended whether as a participant or a spectator. Best of all we raised over $1300.00 in entries and donations for the American Cancer Society!
